22eBookBinder 1.4.0 Preview

It's been a while since the last update of eBookBinder. Version 1.4.0 will be a free update for all existing users of eBookBinder, sports some interesting new features, especially a lot of internal improvements and upgrades with it. Due to internal changes the system requirements for eBookBinder had to be raised to macOS 10.10 or later. Because of the many internal changes, the test phase until the final release will be a little longer than usual.

Textbundle / Textpack

One of the most important new features is the support for Textbundle- and Textpack-files. Both formats are open standards that are of particular interest to those using markup-languages in their documents. The special thing about these file formats is that media-files are included (pictures / video / audio) in a open container and therefore the access to the data is convenient. For more information about the Textbundle-format can be found on the official site: http://textbundle.org

Audio / Video

Since the first release of eBookBinder I get requests regarding video- and audio-file-support every now and then. Now it is finally here, eBookBinder can see embedded video- and audio-files in chapters and include them in the final eBook. However, there's a few things to consider, currently only video- and audio-files in RTFD, Textbundle- and Textpack-files can be processed. In addition there are a few more things that need to be considered. I will publish a detailed tutorial soon. Those who want to experiment with video- and / or audio-files at once, should use the writing-app Textedit (on any Mac already installed) with RTFD-file-format and use mp3-files for audio and mp4-files for video.

Mobipocket-Creation

The last topic I want to discuss is the creation of mobipocket-files (kindle Amazon eBook reader). In recent macOS versions SIP (System Integrity Protection) was introduced. SIP prevents eBookBinder, which operates in a sandbox, the access to the "kindlegen" Terminal-tool, which is necessary for the creation of mobipocket-files. For those who want to create mobipocket-files with eBookBinder, I now offer a sandbox-free version of eBookBinder directly on this page. Mac App Store customers of eBookBinder are automatically recognized and can use the direct version without restrictions.

The most important thing: the download links to eBookBinder 1.4.0 Beta 1 and the complete, detailed list of changes:
